The company Tanimura & Antle, based out of Salinas, California, has begun to recall a lot of lettuce because of a salmonella test which was conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. The test was one that was randomly conducted, as if often the case with produce, and came back positive for salmonella contamination. Tanimura & Antle have voluntarily decided to recall the lettuce in order to avoid potential illness among consumers. The lettuce was recalled in the 29 states, to which it was shipped, including California. It is said to have been picked between June 25th and July 2nd and is correlated with the lot number 531380. Though the lettuce is now well beyond its expiration date, any consumers that still have any amount of the contaminated batch are being asked and encouraged by Tanimura & Antle to destroy the lettuce immediately to avoid contamination. Thus far there have thankfully been no illnesses or deaths reported as a result of this salmonella contamination.

This is just one of a number of food product recalls that has occurred in the United States in 2009. The year began with a recall of peanut butter that was made from peanuts contaminated with salmonella. A peanut company in Georgia apparently sent the contaminated peanuts to a number of different peanut butter manufacturers. The outbreak led to several deaths and hundreds of reports of illness across the country as a result of salmonellosis. Following the peanut butter salmonella outbreak was a recall of pistachios. Over two million pounds of pistachios produced by a California-based company were recalled because of potential salmonella poisoning and a number of reports of illness due to salmonellosis.

Nuts have not been the only food product recalled this year because of salmonella. In fact, salmonella has not been the only cause of California food product recall this year, either. As recently as two months ago there have been food recalls because of other bacterial and viral scares. In June the multi-million dollar corporation Nestle was forced to recall prepackaged cookie dough because of reports of E.coli infections. These infections sprouted when consumers ate the cookie dough raw. Although most people have heard of the danger of eating foods that contain raw eggs and other animal products, it is common for consumers to eat cookie dough before actually cooking it. Lawsuits have already begun to be filed against Nestle for manufacturing and selling the contaminated cookie dough, the first of which was filed by an 18-year old woman who was forced to spend a week in the hospital after becoming ill from an E.coli infection. She, as well as others who became sick from the contaminated product, luckily survived.
